Respondus LockDown Browser
Steps to take to ensure a successful exam with the Respondus LockDown Browser:
1. Be sure that you are that you are connected to a strong secure internet connection, not Wi-Fi.
If you must use Wi-Fi, make sure no other devices are using the network. Connect with a cable to the modem - this is Strongly urged.
If the monitor is required, it will require a large amount of bandwidth.
2. You may have to update the LDB. When you open the browser click the "i" in a circle icon, located at the top of the LDB window. Click the "Check for Newer Version button". If needed, click the Get Update button and follow the prompts, if any. The browser will re-open when the update is installed.
IDEALLY
- The student will restart their computer before the test.
- Open no other programs.
- Wait for Canvas pages to finish loading before clicking any links.
- Take the test in the morning or evening
Most LockDown Browser errors are the result of a failure to connect to the Respondus servers.
Respondus works with the following devices:
- PC
- Mac
- iPad - you must download from the Apple App store
- Chromebook.
- Does not work with Mobile Devices
In-Browser Support - Use the Help Center button at the top of the browser window for help from Respondus while taking a test.

Installing Respondus Lockdown Browser
1. Go to your Canvas course site and click the quiz link.
Click Take the Quiz.2.
3. Click Download Respondus LockDown Browser. This takes you to the Respondus website.
4. Click Install Now. This will download a .zip archive containing either a .pkg (Mac) or .exe (Windows) file. If the .zip file doesn't unpack automatically, double click on it.
Taking the Quiz with Respondus LockDown Browser
1. Run LockDown Browser from your desktop (PC) or from your Applications folder (Mac).
2. You may see a pop-up suggesting that you close one or more programs before continuing. Click Kill these applications to have LockDown Browser do this for you.
3. Choose Canvas from the Choose Server dropdown menu and click OK. You will then be prompted to log into Cardinal Apps.
4. Click the Canvas tile to login to Canvas, then you will see your Dashboard. Click on your course to go to the site.
5. Find and click the link for the quiz.
6. Click Take the Quiz.
7. When you have entered your answers and are ready to submit the quiz, click Submit quiz.
8. Log out of Canvas.
9. Click the X on the far upper left. When you see Are you sure want to quit Respondus LockDown Browser?, click Quit.
IMPORTANT - If you receive an error message saying you must use a standard browser, use your regular browser, (Chrome, Firefox, etc). Navigate to the quiz and click the quiz name. The LockDown Browser will open and you can proceed with the test.
If you have taken every precaution and are still not able to connect, use a different computer.
