Through the Flip-Canvas integration, it is even easier to connect the two platforms and make it easier for educators to share Flip with their students. Connecting Flip to your Canvas course allows you to assign Flip topics as assignments in Canvas. This app supports the Canvas SpeedGrader, allowing you to quickly cycle through student video submissions from Flip to assign a grade. Generate Unique Course Keys

Step 1

Open the Flip website and select Log In to log in to your Flip account. If you haven't created a Flip account, you can learn how to create a Flip account for Educators here.

Step 2

Click on your round profile icon, likely containing an emoji, in the upper right part of the page and select the Integrations option.

Step 3

Click on the + button next to the "Create a new Canvas integration" section. This will create one new set of keys for a single Canvas course.

Step 4

Give your integration a name. You'll repeat this process for each course you want to connect to Flip, so it's recommended you name every integration after the course you're setting up for easier management. Select Create when you're finished.

Step 5

Now, you'll see an integration appear on the page with the name you provided. Each class you connect with Flip will need to have its' own Consumer Key and Shared Secret that are unique and used to add Flip to that specific course.

Connecting Flip to Canvas

Step 1

Open the course within Canvas where you'd like to add Flip and select Settings towards the bottom of the Navigation Menu.

Step 2

Open the "Apps" tab toward the top of the page.

Step 3

  1. Use the on-page search bar and type in "Flip".
  2. Click on the single result that appears with the Flip logo.

Step 4

Once you've selected the Flip icon, click on the + Add App button.

Step 5

Here, you'll need to enter some fields titled "Consumer key" and "Shared Secret Key".

You can obtain these in the first section of this guide titled "Generate Unique Course Keys". Once, or if, you've followed those steps to generate keys from your Flip account, then proceed to copy/paste the Consumer Key and Shared Secret generated in Flip to the "Add App" menu in Canvas.

If you have trouble creating these keys or where to enter them in Canvas, contact a Software Specialist for assistance.

Step 6

Open the "Navigation" tab towards the top of the page.

Step 7

Find the Flip open within the "Drag items here to hide them..." section below. Click and drag it to the top section to place it on the active Navigation Menu. Select Save.

This will place it in your navigation menu. We don't want to keep it there long-term, but will need it temporarily to finish connecting your course to Flip. Don't see the Flip option? Refresh your webpage and it will appear.

Don't forget to select Save to save your changes!

Step 8

Find and open the Flip option within the course's Navigation Menu.

Step 9

When first opened, Flip will prompt you with a "Connect Flip" pop-up. Click on the "Create a course group" button to fully connect your Canvas course to Flip. If you receive an error or notice that does not prompt you to create a course group, see the FAQ section and make sure you're using Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge.

Note: This will only occur when Flip is first opened from Canvas. If this is not completed, students will receive an error when attempting their first Flip assignment in the course.

Step 10

Now, we need to remove Flip from the Navigation Menu. This is because, students need to access Flip directly from the assignment page, rather than the website or a Navigation Menu option to avoid any issues.

Open your course Settings once more, and select the "Navigation" tab. Remove Flip from your navigation menu by reversing step 7 and dragging Flip to the "Drag items here to hide them..." section below. Select Save.

Finished! You must complete this entire guide for each course you are using Flip with. See the FAQ section below for more information and assistance.

FAQ

What do I do next with this integration?

Learn how to create a Flip assignment in Canvas.

Do I have to connect Flip through Canvas if I want to use Flip?

No. This guide uses the LTI integration of Flip. The benefits of connecting Flip through Canvas and creating Flip assignments through Canvas allows for features like SpeedGrader support and no account creation for students. The fact that students do not need to make a Flip account to participate in your Flip discussions due to the integration, and can simply open the assignment from their Canvas assignment page, is easier for them. If you are using Flip by itself and linking to topics, then student's would have to go out of Canvas and create accounts, which you'd need to then grade responses manually from site-to-site. So, OTLT recommends using the integration. Learn more about the features and limitations of the Flip-Canvas integration.

Do students have to setup a Flip account like me?

No. Students do NOT need to make a Flip account to access your assignment if you have connected Flip to your Canvas course and are creating Flip assignments through Canvas. They will interact with the Flip assignment through the assignment page, which uses magic to allow them to participate. Learn and share our student guide to submitting a Flip assignment.

When I open Flip from my Navigation Menu, I receive a "Having trouble signing in?" message

You are receiving this message because you are not signed in to Flip in your browser or are using a browser that blocks cross-site tracking, like Safari and FireFox. To fix this, follow the steps in the prompt or our recommended steps:

  1. Switch either to Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge.
  2. Open the Flip website and log in to your account.
  3. In the same browser, navigate to your Canvas course and try again.
