Creating a Flip assignment in Canvas is a convenient way for educators to use Flip in their course. This is due to SpeedGrader support, and allowing students to access Flip directly with their Canvas account. Before you can create a Flip assignment, you must:

To create a Flip assignment in Canvas:

  1. Login to Cardinal Apps.
  2. Open Canvas LMS.
  3. Open the Canvas course.
  4. Open Assignments.
  5. In the top right, click + Assignment.
  6. Provide details, such as a name, description, grading, and more for your assignment.
  7. Under Submission Type:
    1. Change to External Tool.
    2. Check Load This Tool In A New Tab.
    3. Select Find.

In-Depth Walkthrough

Step 1

Login to Cardinal Apps and open Canvas LMS.

Step 2

Navigate to your Canvas course, and open the "Assignments" menu option within the course you'd like to create a Flip assignment in.

Step 3

Create a new assignment by clicking the + Assignment button in the upper right side of the page.

Note: The integration won't work if you simply change the settings for an existing assignment.

Step 4

Give your assignment a name, and fill in your assignment details. Some recommendations to include in a Flip assignment:

Step 5

Once you get to the 'Submission Type' area in the assignment page:

  1. Choose the External Tool drop-down option.
  2. Check the "Load this Tool in a New Tab" box.
  3. Click the Find button.

Step 6

After clicking on Find in the previous step, scroll down and click on "Flip", then click the Select button.

Step 7

When you're finished with adjusting the settings for the assignment, click 'Save & Publish' to publish your assignment. If you don't want to publish just yet, choose Save.

Step 7a (circumstantial)

If this is your first Flip assignment in a course, click the 'Load this Tool in a New Tab' button on the assignment page. If you:

  • See a "Connect Flip" prompt: Click the Create a course group button. This only needs to be done once per course and should have been done when connecting Flip to Canvas.
  • Do not see a "Connect Flip" prompt: You're good to go!

Done! Your students will need to access Flip through the Canvas assignment page, and can use the 'Add to topic' button in Flip to submit a response. See the FAQ below for more information.

FAQ

How do students submit assignments?

Students simply head directly to the assignment page for Flip and use the 'Load this tool in a new tab' to open Flip and get started on their assignment. Some things to note:

  • Do not send a direct link to your Flip assignment to your students. Students must access the Flip assignment only through the Canvas assignment page
  • Students do not need to do anything outside of Canvas
  • Students do not need to sign up for a Flip account

My students state they cannot see the assignment or are receiving an error when viewing

If the participant is using Apple Safari or Mozilla Firefox as their web browser, Flip might not display properly or not at all if the 'Load this Tool in a new tab' box is not checked. Make sure the "Load this Tool In A New Tab" option is turned on for the assignment. Additionally, it's recommended to use Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge when using Canvas apps such as Flip.

I have more questions about the Flip-Canvas integration.
