Padlet enhances instruction by fostering collaborative learning, engagement, creativity, and accessibility. It organizes materials, aids assessment, and enables peer interaction, making it valuable for remote and traditional classrooms while promoting reflection. Canvas offers a Padlet app which allows instructors to connect an existing Padlet board directly to a Canvas assignment. This is beneficial as participants do not have to create an extra account or leave Canvas to participate in your Padlet board. Before you can use the Padlet app in Canvas, ensure:


Once you have been granted a UIW Padlet account and have created your first board, you are ready to create a Padlet assignment in Canvas.

  1. Login to Cardinal Apps.
  2. Open Canvas LMS.
  3. Navigate to your Canvas course.
  4. Select Assignments.
  5. Select + Assignment.
  6. Fill out your assignment details, such as a name, description, grading, etc.
  7. Change the Submission Type to External Tool.
  8. Check the 'Load This Tool in A New Tab' option.
  9. Select Find.
  10. Select Padlet from the list.
  11. Select the Padlet board you wish to use with the assignment.
  12. Select Save.
  13. Save your assignment and publish if applicable.

Before you can use Padlet with Canvas, ensure:


Step 1

Head to the course you'd like to create a Padlet assignment for, and select the Assignments option in the Nav menu.

Step 2

Select the + Assignment in the upper right of the page to start a new assignment. You must start an assignment from the beginning, as you cannot change an existing assignment to use Padlet.

Step 3

Give your assignment a name and description. For an example description, free to copy/paste, visit our example 'Padlet' page. description set, you may use the example found here.

When using an external tool like Padlet, it's considered best practice to provide guidance for students on submitting the assignment. You can do that within the description area of the Padlet assignment. See the FAQ & Troubleshooting section for templated info.


Step 4

Under the 'Submission Type' area of the assignment:

  1. Make sure the External Tool is selected.
  2. Check the 'Load This Tool in a New Tab' option.
  3. Select Find.

Step 5

After selecting the Find button, scroll down the list and:

  1. Select Padlet to open the Padlet window.
    1. If nothing happens after selecting Padlet, you may be using an unsupported browser. Try again in Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge.
  2. Select the Padlet you wish to use in the assignment.
    1. If you have yet to create the Padlet, use the 'Make a padlet' option to open the dashboard and create a Padlet instantly. You will need to repeat this step for the new Padlet board to be available on the selectable list.
    2. Generally, the 'Create a copy for each user' option is left turned off and is not recommended.
  3. Once you've selected your Padlet board, the window will disappear and you can choose Select.

Once you're finished entering all your assignment details, select Save & Publish or just Save in the bottom right of the page and you're done.

Congratulations, you have created a Padlet assignment in Canvas. Students will need to interact with the assignment directly through the assignment page in Canvas.




FAQ & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to login to Padlet but It cannot recognize my account.

UIW has a specific Padlet portal, and UIW accounts will only work in that portal. Make sure you're trying to log in to the UIW Padlet portal. If you continue to experience issues, contact a Software Specialist.


How do course participants access the Padlet assignment?

If you followed this guide and created an assignment as an External Tool with Padlet, course participants will access the Padlet assignment directly from the assignment page in Canvas.


How does a course participant complete a Padlet assignment?

  1. Navigate to the assignment page in Canvas.
  2. Choose the 'Load This Tool in A New Tab' button.
  3. Post a response to the Padlet board.


What if I don't want to use Padlet in an assignment, can I still use Padlet for discussions?

Yes. The Padlet app in Canvas is mainly meant for assignments. However, you may want to use Padlet as a discussion activity for a non-graded assignment. You can:

  1. Login to the UIW Padlet portal.
  2. Create your Padlet board.
  3. Share your Padlet board with a link, embed, or QR code.
