How to create a Canvas grade from a Poll Everywhere activity
Why use Poll Everywhere with Canvas?
What if you could grade your students on their responses to your Poll Everywhere activities? The Poll Everywhere integration for Canvas allows you to export participant responses as a gradebook item. Choose between a participation or weighted grade based on the activity involved.
This integration is split into two parts:
- Connecting your Canvas course and Poll Everywhere
- Exporting an activity to your gradebook
Before you begin...
Step 1
Login to Cardinal Apps and open the Poll Everywhere app
Step 2
Found on the left sidebar, click on the Participants button ()
Step 3
Click on 'LMS Courses'
Step 4
Here, you'll see a list of courses that you've synced to Poll Everywhere. Find the course you'd like to send a grade to and click on it.
Don't see your course? Make sure you connected your Canvas course to Poll Everywhere.
Note: Your course list will differ from the one pictured above.
Step 5
Click the 'Add new gradebook' option
Each grade you send to Canvas is counted as a 'gradebook' item and you'll see a list of each grade you've sent to Canvas on this page as time goes on.
Step 6
Select the 'Gradebook' option and then click Continue to proceed.
Step 7
Select the activity/activities you'd like to create a grade from. Once you're ready, click 'Create report'
Here is the report page, where you can receive an overview on the participants, grade, and participation in the activity you selected.
-
Name of the participant.
- Participants with the (unregistered) moniker were NOT registered at the time of participating in the activity, meaning they cannot receive a grade from this report. Make sure the activities you are exporting grades from are restricted to 'Registered participants only'.
-
Rank: Sorts by correctness and speed across all activities.
-
Grade: Percentage of total correct responses across all activities. Responses to ungraded activities are not counted. If multiple responses per question are allowed, any correct response marks the entire response correct.
-
Participation: Percentage of activities answered by the participant
-
Polls: indicates the correctness of participants' response
To learn more about the menu options on this page, visit the gradebook reporting guide found here.
Step 8
When you've reviewed the gradebook report, click the Export button() in the bottom right of the page.
Step 9
- If you have more than one course, double-check the course is correctly listed (the one you're sending the grade to)
-
Choose your grading type
- Grade: For activities that have a correct answer, give a participant a grade based on whether or not they answered correctly.
- Participation: Give a participant 100% simply if they participated in the activity.
- Click Next
After a few moments, the export to the course's gradebook will finish. Click Close and head to Canvas to check the gradebook of the selected course.
Within your course's gradebook, you'll now see a new column with the name of the report you ran. All registered students that participated in your activity will have a grade assigned to them.
FAQ
What does this Poll Everywhere integration even do?
Connecting Poll Everywhere to your Canvas course allows you to asynchronously pull all registered responses from an activity and export them directly into your Canvas gradebook. You can create a grade based on participation or correct answer response, based on the activity.
Why doesn't this guide start in Canvas?
When sending grades to Canvas, Poll Everywhere must create and run a report. All work is done within Poll Everywhere and sent to Canvas.
Do I need to create a gradebook column/item by myself?
No. You do not need to create a gradebook column/item unless you plan on not using the Poll Everywhere integration. Running the Poll Everywhere report to export a grade will automatically create a gradebook column/item in your Canvas course. The name of the activity will be the same as the name of the report ran.
I exported and chose 'Grade' from an activity but it did not go through to the gradebook...
Your activity might not have been a correct answer activity. Only some activities can have 'correct' answers designated (like multiple choice). Most activity types will only allow for 'Participation' grades. When viewing the gradebook report, you can look at the 'grade' column to see if your activity had a correct answer percentage.
