Embed Media in Canvas with EchoVideo
Note: This guide assumes you are using a Windows, macOS, or ChromeOS computer. The EchoVideo embed options aren't available through the Canvas mobile application for iOS and Android.
EchoVideo provides a media embed button (also called an "easy embed button") that appears in the Rich Content Editor of Canvas content windows. This button opens the EchoVideo embed menu, which provides the ability to:
- Embed media from EchoVideo directly into a Canvas course.
- Upload a media file then embed it as a single process.
- Create new media with Universal Capture then embed it in a single process.
- Post a link to the media (instead of embedding it) into Canvas.
- Create a playlist and embed it directly into Canvas.
You can access the embed menu from anywhere with the Rich Content Editor in Canvas. To embed EchoVideo media into Canvas:
- Log in to Cardinal Apps
- Open the area in Canvas where you need to embed a video
- Select the EchoVideo app within the editor
- If necessary, use the Upload Media option to upload a video
- Select "Launch Media Picker"
- Select the media you want to use in Canvas and select Next
- If appropriate, adjust video upload settings
- Select Embed
- Save or submit in Canvas

In-Depth Walkthrough
Step 1: Open the EchoVideo App
Find the assignment, page, or discussion area within Canvas featuring the Rich Content Editor (RCE). The RCE is a versatile submission field with tools like Bold, Italics, Underline, Links, and more.
Find the apps tray and open the EchoVideo application
Note: If the EchoVideo button is not visible, expand the browser window or click on apps tray (plug icon) to find more options.
Step 2: Select a Media Option
Selecting the EchoVideo button opens a menu with a content selection screen, giving you a variety of options to select and insert media. This guide assumes you have either uploaded content to your EchoVideo library, or you have recorded content with the Browser Capture tool. To continue, select the "Launch Media Picker" option.
Step 3: Select a Video
The Media Picker in EchoVideo displays the audio, video, and interactive media you own. Instructors will also see content from their assigned classes and media from any Collection where they have "Post" permissions. Use the Search box, Sort by, and Filter options to find your media. Once you've selected your media, click "Next."
Recently uploaded content can easily be found by Sort by -> Date created.
Step 4: Adjust embed options
Before you submit the video to Canvas, review and adjust video embed options as needed. These settings influence the appearance and functionality of your video within Canvas.
Step 5: Submit/finalize the submission
Complete any remaining fields within the embed options, then click the appropriate prompt (such as Embed, Save, Post, or Save & Publish) to finalize. Once the item is published or a post is submitted, participants can access it and view the embedded video wherever it was added. If the "Autoplay" or "Start At" options were selected in the embed options, those settings take effect for the viewer.
FAQ
My video says 'Not Yet Ready' or is not loading after I finish this process.
This applies to larger pieces of content. After uploading, the preview and published versions of the file will show a message that the media is currently processing. Once processing is complete, the embedded media will appear. You can continue finalizing your submission by saving the page or submitting your post.
What if I want to insert multiple videos in Canvas?
This can be done, but your embed options will change as EchoVideo will insert a playlist instead of a single embedded video. Learn more about inserting playlists in Canvas from EchoVideo.
