How to embed a Video from Microsoft Stream
Embedding a video from Microsoft Stream
Videos stored in OneDrive, SharePoint, or Teams can be embedded into other spaces, like your Canvas course or third-party websites and blogs.
Video embeds require a few more steps than simply sharing a video file, and permissions to the people you'd like to view the video must be granted to the file/folder. This guide will walk you through creating an embed code in the (New) Stream and show you where to designate permissions for it.

Assigning permissions to a video file
Step 1
Login to Cardinal Apps and locate the video file you'd like to create an embed for.
Videos will either be stored within OneDrive or a SharePoint site. The Stream app isn't where your videos live, but will allow you to quickly get to recently interacted video content.
SharePoint is where Teams store files shared within the Teams app.
Step 2
Within the video player (shown while viewing a video), or next to the video file, find and click on the Share icon
Step 3
Find and click on the gear icon in the upper right of the Share menu.
Step 4
Once the 'Link Settings' window appears, you can change the type of sharing access you want to create for a link, and some settings associated with the link.
Make your adjustments for who will be able to watch the video and if they can edit/download it or not.
"Link settings" explanation
-
Anyone with the link - Grants access to anyone inside and outside of UIW access to your video through the sharing link.
-
People in UIW with the link - Grants access to your video to only UIW personnel through the sharing link.
-
People with existing access - Grants access to your video to people with existing access to the video
-
Specific people - Allows you to manually enter people, groups, or Teams to only allow those entered emails access to your video through the sharing link.
"Other settings" explanation
- The permissions box allows for 'Can edit' or 'Can view' options. 'Can edit' grants editing access, and 'Can view' doesn't allow recipients to edit content.
- Set the expiration date on the link. The sharing link cannot last longer than the default, which is for one year.
- Enter an optional password for the link. This is not required.
- Toggle the option to block the viewer's ability to download your video. This is only available to toggle if the permissions in [a] were set to 'Can view'.
Step 5
Once you've set the permissions on the sharing link, click the Apply button
Step 6
Next, enter the email address of each person, group, or Team that you'd like to be able to watch the video embed.
Step 7
When you've assigned permission to the appropriate people, groups, or Team... finish creating the link by clicking the Copy link button or the Send button.
- Copy link - Creates an immediate shareable link to use.
- Send - Sends the added people, group, or Team an email with the link to the file/video.
In the photo, there is a group/Team and an individual entered. Groups and Teams can contain tens to hundreds of people and are a convenient way to give bulk permissions.
Now, you can see the circle icons in the bottom left of the window now include the groups, people, or teams you decided to share with. You can click on this area to get more details on who can/has accessed the video file.
Obtaining the embed code
Now that permissions have been granted to the video we'd like to share, we can now grab embed code for the content. If you copy/paste embed code before assigning permissions to a video file, your viewers might not be able to view the video.
Step 1a
Login to Cardinal Apps and locate the video file you'd like to create an embed for.
Videos will either be stored within OneDrive or a SharePoint site. The Stream app isn't where your videos live, but will allow you to quickly get to recently interacted video content.
SharePoint is where Teams store files shared within the Teams app.
Step 2a
The embed buttonwill be in a different space depending on where you are viewing the video from.
- If you're viewing from OneDrive/SharePoint, you can select the video file and find the embed buttonwithin the elipses menu
- If you're viewing from (New) Stream or from a sharing link, you can find it via the Share button in the upper right.
Step 3a
When selected, the embed code will pop out from the right side, as well as some options that can be explained below. Click 'Copy embed code' when you're finished adjusting your settings appropriately.
- Automatically starts the video from a specific timestamp
- Manually go to the part of the video to have this field automatically fill in the timestamp.
- Adjust the embed size. The default 640 x 360 size is recommended, because the viewer always has a fullscreen toggle.
- Automatically play the embedded video when the viewer opens the webpage the video is embedded on.
- Automatically adjusts the video embed to the size of the viewer's web page.
- Displays the video title in the embed.''
Step 4a
Paste your code within the embed function on your desired platform.
For Canvas...
You'll find the embed code function within the 'three dot' menu in the upper right.
FAQ
If I move my video, do I have to embed it again?
No. If your video file moves to a different location within your OneDrive the video embed will continue to work.
If your video file moves from OneDrive or SharePoint to the opposite platform (OneDrive -> SharePoint and vice versa) then existing sharing links will break.
My viewers are saying they don't have access (pictured below). Why?
Make sure you have assigned the appropriate permissions in steps 1-7 of this guide. If you are confident these permissions are correct, advise your viewers to clear their browsing history, login to Cardinal Apps, and try viewing the video again.
