Applications for Trimming Videos and Recordings
Trimming a video clip involves editing or removing the beginning or end of the clip. This is especially useful for video recordings that have dead space at the start or end, such as recorded MS Teams meetings. Trimming is also one of the first steps in learning basic video editing, as the process gets the user familiar with skills and concepts used throughout all video editing. While there are several ways to trim a video, we will focus on some options that are free, ideal, and easily accessible to UIW personnel. In this guide, we'll focus on:
- Universal Solutions (Windows and macOS).
- Windows-only solutions.
- macOS-only solutions.
Universal Solutions
Microsoft Stream
Any video stored in OneDrive or SharePoint plays in Microsoft Stream and can be easily trimmed up to 10 times. This is the most convenient method for trimming meeting recordings, lectures, and casual video content.
Camtasia
Camtasia is a video editing and screen recording tool that is available for free download on macOS and Windows for all UIW faculty and staff. Educators build the program, and it has a user-friendly interface that allows users to easily import video and audio content, trim videos, and export them to upload to Microsoft Stream and other platforms. Camtasia is a great tool for creating professional-looking videos and recordings.
Note: Visit TechSmith's site for Camtasia Tutorials or contact a Software Specialist for one-on-one assistance.
PowerPoint
Surprisingly, you can trim videos within PowerPoint and then export them to be uploaded elsewhere to Stream or other platforms.
Note: PowerPoint is installed on all UIW devices issued to faculty/staff. If you need to install Microsoft PowerPoint, contact the UIW Help Desk.
EchoVideo (HPS Only)
Note: This option is only available to members in the Health Professions Sites.
EchoVideo is a service from Echo360 that integrates personal and classroom video capture, student engagement tools, and analytic tools to maximize student participation and engagement for both campus-based and online courses. HPS instructors can use it to edit and trim entire videos after uploading content to their library.
macOS-only Solutions
Quicktime
All macOS devices have Quicktime, a default video player, built-in and it is the default video player for Macs.
iMovie
Mac users can use iMovie to trim video content, which comes pre-installed with macOS. If iMovie isn't installed or you are having trouble finding the application, you can download it for free from the Apple App Store. Once content is imported, it can be edited or trimmed.
Windows-only Solutions
Microsoft Photos App
If you own a Windows PC, you can use the built-in Windows Photo app to edit and trim videos. This app is typically the default application for opening photos and videos in Windows.
