Alternative Applications to Trim Videos or Recordings
What is Trimming?
Trimming is the capability to edit/remove the start or end of a video clip. This is useful for recordings with dead space at the start or end, such as a recorded Teams meeting. Microsoft Stream currently does not have the feature to trim any videos like Classic Stream did. There is a new and improved recording tool, which offers editing capabilities, but you can no longer edit any video uploaded to the service once it's finished processing. While this is unfortunate, this means you'll need to trim videos before you upload them to OneDrive or Microsoft Stream or while you're using the new and improved recording tool. While not every method to trim a video is included, we will discuss options that are free, ideal, and accessible to UIW personnel.
Windows and macOS solutions
Camtasia
Camtasia is available at no cost to all UIW faculty and staff. It is a friendly, approachable video editor and screen recording tool that is available to download for macOS and Windows. The program utilizes a drag and drop interface, making it easy to bring in video and audio content, clip videos to your liking, and export to upload to Microsoft Stream and beyond.
See TechSmith's site for Camtasia Tutorials or reach out to a Software Specialist for a tutorial.
PowerPoint
Videos can be trimmed within PowerPoint, and then exported to be uploaded elsewhere. Learn how to Trim a video, music clip, or sound clip in PowerPoint for both Windows and macOS.
PowerPoint is installed on all UIW devices issued to Faculty/staff. If you need to install Microsoft PowerPoint, follow this guide on installing Microsoft Apps.
EchoVideo
This option is only available to members in the Health Professions Sites. HPS instructors can upload content to their EchoVideo library, edit that content in EchoVideo's video editor, and then download the newly edited video and upload it to OneDrive or Microsoft Stream.
macOS-only solutions
Quicktime
By far the quickest and most convenient method to trimming videos. This video player is built-in to all macOS devices and is the default video player for macs. Users can trim a video with a few simple clicks, then upload it to OneDrive or Microsoft Stream.
iMovie from Apple
Mac users can use iMovie, which comes pre-installed with macOS. If iMovie isn't installed, it can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store. With it's bubbly, approachable interface users can easily import their piece of media. Once you've edited your video and exported it as a local file, you can upload it into OneDrive or Microsoft Stream.
Windows-only solutions
Microsoft Photos App
If a user has a Windows PC, they can use the built-in Windows Photo app to trim/edit videos in. This app is normally the default app for opening photos and video. Users can learn how to trim and export content in the Photos app, and then upload it to OneDrive or Microsoft Stream.
