Canvas Plagiarism Draft Check Explained
Each Canvas course template includes a zero-point assignment in the Course Orientation for Students module called Plagiarism Draft Check. We recommend instructors include this practice assignment with their course to allow students the opportunity to check their writing before submitting written work for a grade. The assignment gives the student an opportunity to see a similarity report, and practice editing to correct any issues ahead of turning in a final paper. Note, the settings for this assignment should never be changed to ensure the practice does not count against students when they submit their final papers.
Students interested in checking their writing in a course that does not include this practice assignment can instead use the Draft Coach feature in Word online.
Instructor Steps to Publish
- Open your course and navigate to the Course Orientation for Students module in Canvas.
- If you plan to use the Course Orientation for Students module, be sure to publish it. By default, the module is unpublished.
- To use the assignment, but not the course orientation module, simply drag the assignment to another module you will publish.

Remember not to change the options for the assignment to ensure Turnitin remains set-up with the check box for Index all submissions unchecked. The unchecked box guarantees that the submission will not be added to the Turnitin database. Subsequent resubmissions of the drafts will not affect the similarity report when students submit for a grade.
