Allow Microsoft Word in a LockDown Browser Canvas Quiz
This guide explains how instructors can allow students to use Microsoft Word within LockDown Browser for an essay question. With Monitor and Screen Recording enabled, students can type their essays in Word while remaining in a secure, monitored testing environment.
Once set up, LockDown Browser will:
- Allow access to Microsoft Word as an approved external application.
- Alternatively, you can allow access to MS Excel instead of Word.
- Record either or both the student’s screen and webcam using Respondus Monitor.
Step 1: Access LockDown Browser Dashboard
In your course menu, open LockDown Browser. If it isn’t visible, go to Course Settings, open the Navigation tab, enable LockDown Browser, and click Save.

Step 2: Open the Exam Settings
Locate the quiz you want to configure, click the menu arrow next to the quiz title, then select Settings from the options.

Step 3: Enable LockDown Browser Requirement
Select Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this quiz so students use LockDown Browser.

Step 4: Enable Respondus Monitor and Recording Options
Enable Require Respondus Monitor (automated proctoring) to record students during the exam. Choose to record both the webcam and screen, or screen only, based on your quiz preferences.

Step 5: Review Startup Sequence and Face Detection Settings
Review the Startup Sequence options and Face Detection settings to ensure they align with your exam requirements.

Step 6: Open Advanced Settings
In the Advanced Settings section, select Allow switching to another application during the assessment (requires a Windows or Mac computer). Then, choose Microsoft Word as the approved application. As an alternative, you can select Microsoft Excel if your exam requires spreadsheet functionality.

Step 7: Save your Settings
Click Save + Close to apply and confirm your settings.

Allow Word in LockDown Browser FAQ
Can I allow both Microsoft Word and Excel for the same exam?
No. You can select only one external application at a time in LockDown Browser’s Advanced Settings. Choose the one that best fits your exam format: Word for essays or Excel for data and calculations.
Can students use Chromebooks or iPads for exams that allow switching to Word or Excel?
No. Exams that allow switching to Microsoft Word or Excel must be taken on a Windows or Mac computer with the desktop version installed. The switching feature is not supported on Chromebooks, iPads, or mobile devices; therefore, students using these devices will be unable to open Word or Excel during the exam.
How can I preview or review student recordings after the exam?
In the LockDown Browser Dashboard, find your exam and open the menu next to its title. Choose Class Results to see student recordings and review webcam or screen captures.
