Cardinal Quiz Converter: Overview
The Cardinal Quiz Converter is a custom University of the Incarnate Word app that creates Canvas quizzes from formatted documents. It allows you to write quiz questions in a document and convert them into Canvas-ready quizzes without entering questions one at a time. With precise formatting, this tool provides a faster and more efficient way to build quizzes in Canvas.
This tool offers two different experiences:
- The Web option creates a QTI file that you download and then upload into your Canvas course.
- The native Canvas integration creates and imports the quiz directly into your course, eliminating the need to download or manually upload a file.

Cardinal Quiz Converter Availability
The web version of the Cardinal Quiz Converter is available for anyone to create a QTI file. Those with roles in Canvas that allow quiz editing, such as Teachers and TAs, can import the QTI to make a quiz. You can also access the tool in the more menu on the Quizzes page in Canvas; locate the option to Convert File to QTI.
At UIW, the native Canvas integration is available from the More (three vertical dots) menu on any Quizzes page in Canvas. It is visible to Teachers and teacher-like roles who have permission to create and edit quizzes within a Canvas course.
Cardinal Quiz Converter Considerations
- Precise formatting of the file is required, so templates are provided to edit conveniently.
- If the website is used, you must import the QTI into a Canvas course separately.
- If the Canvas integration is used, you have the option to import the quiz directly into your course.
- Accepted file types for conversion include:.txt, .md, .docx, .csv
- CSV files have some limitations; all question types and features are not fully supported.
