Canvas Outcomes: Support Students
Implementing Canvas Outcomes is a significant change for both instructors and students. This guide outlines simple ways instructors can support students during the transition and ensure a successful term.
Provide Clear Student Instructions
For a smoother teaching experience, help students understand how to view their outcome feedback:
New to Recording Videos?
- Use Microsoft Clipchamp to make a screen recording.
- Save your video in OneDrive.
-
Share the video in your course with the OneDrive App in Canvas.
Adjust Your Course Menu
Provide the Grades and Outcomes links on your Canvas course navigation menu to facilitate students' ability to monitor their progress. Remember to click Save after you edit your navigation options in Settings. It's important you understand the purpose and differences between these two options to answer student questions:
Grades Link for Students: Provides grade details, outcomes achievements, feedback, and the course grade structure.
- Visible to students on the course menu unless disabled by the instructor.
- Opens on the Assignments tab for traditional grades view.
- Students switch to the Learning Mastery tab to access outcomes achievements.

Outcomes Link for Students: Provides the list of all outcomes, rating scales, and calculation methods for student reference.
- Hidden from students on the course menu unless enabled by the instructor.
- Making the link visible helps students understand how outcomes work in Canvas, which is helpful for those new to competency-based assessment.
- Information is the same as an instructor's view of Outcomes, but students' access is view-only.
- Make sure your outcomes match your syllabus to avoid confusion.

Student View Options
Understanding how students experience grades and outcomes in Canvas is essential for providing clear support. There are two student view options that are especially helpful when students may need extra guidance:
- Use your View as Student button to understand the general student experience using Canvas features. However, note that View as Student does not work with any third-party tools in Canvas.
-
View an individual student's grades page when meeting privately with students to discuss their performance or answering specific questions they may have.

Canvas Outcomes is a robust feature requiring careful planning to ensure assessment integrity. We encourage faculty and administrators to carefully review each of our guides:
