Course Outcomes vs Account Outcomes in Canvas
Canvas Outcomes can be created at the course level, account level, or using a combination of both. This guide outlines considerations to help faculty and administrators decide the method that meets their needs. Canvas Outcomes cannot be converted from course to account or account to course, requiring careful consideration before adoption.
Course-Level for Instructor Outcomes
Instructors can track student performance on unique, course-specific competencies that are not aligned to program or accreditation standards. Using course-level outcomes for program-level tracking is discouraged as it requires instructors to submit individual reports to leadership.
- Course-level outcomes are built by the instructor within their Canvas course.
- Instructors can export their Learning Mastery Gradebook for a course report.
- No consolidated report across courses.
- Course-level outcomes cannot be changed to account-level outcomes.
Account-Level for Program Outcomes
Departments can provide local, state, national, or global standards to track student performance across all courses in a degree program. This method provides evidence of student performance without asking each instructor to submit an individual report.
- Account-level outcomes are designed and built by the UIW Instructional Technology team in collaboration with department subject matter experts.
- A consolidated report across all courses is available.
- Results report is a raw data spreadsheet that includes every outcome/assessment/student for all courses taught in a term.
- Account-level outcomes cannot be changed into course-level outcomes.
