Grade a SoftChalk Assignment in Canvas
This guide walks you through the steps of grading a SoftChalk assignment in your Canvas course. We recommend you promote Mozilla Firefox and Safari for an optimal student experience with SoftChalk.
Currently, Canvas SpeedGrader does not display student responses to SoftChalk assignments. This means that instructors must grade the assignment through the SoftChalk ScoreCenter located in the Canvas assignment.
- Navigate to the Canvas course through Cardinal Apps.
- Click Assignments in the course navigation menu.
- Select the Canvas assignment you are using with SoftChalk.
- Choose the student's name in the ScoreCenter table for details on the assignment page.
- Click the details under Status to open the student submission.
- Click the circle icon to see the student's work.
- Select the Grade Essay button.
- After entering your Score and Feedback, click Save.
Step 1: Access Your Course
Access Cardinal Apps and open the Canvas LMS app. Locate the course where you can proceed to grade the SoftChalk assignment.

Step 2: Canvas Assignments
Open Assignments in the course navigation bar. This step works even if you have assignments hidden from students.

Step 3: Open Assignment
Choose the SoftChalk Assignment from the assignment's list.

Step 4: ScoreCenter
Within the SoftChalk ScoreCenter, you'll find a central hub for viewing and managing student performance on SoftChalk assignments. To access detailed information about a specific student's assignment, click their name in the ScoreCenter table. This will navigate you to a separate page with all the details of their individual attempt.

Step 5: View Submission
Click the checkmark icon under the Status column or, alternatively, click next to any attempt details to launch the student's submission for grading in a separate window.

Step 6: Learner Icon
On the Learner Details page, locate and click the circle-with-an-L icon to expand and view the student's submission.

Step 7: Grade
After reviewing the student's submission, click the Grade Essay button to assign a score and provide feedback.

Step 8: Save
Once you've finished assigning a score and providing detailed feedback for the student's work, remember to click the "Save" button to ensure your grading information is saved and synced to the Canvas Gradebook.
